favorite things to do are spend time with children, read, and be outside. She gets to do all of those things every day at Prairie Creek. She’s been a student, a teacher, or both since she was five years old. She graduated from Wellesley College, where she earned her first teaching license. After teaching in Maine for five years and earning her master’s degree in education from the University of Maine, she decided to go to graduate school and see what research was all about. Cathy earned her Ph.D. in educational psychology (with a focus in literacy) from Michigan State University, teaching undergraduates and graduate students along the way. She quickly realized that academia wasn't for her, since it kept her too far away from day-to-day interactions with children. So it was a thrill to find herself Prairie Creek in 2005, where her colleagues are so smart and committed and willing to question their practice. Here, she gets to continue to pursue her interests in research and writing while also teaching in a progressive setting. Cathy also teaches one course each year at Carleton College, in Northfield. Cathy and her husband, David, have one son. In her free time, she loves reading and spending time outside and with her family.
